Insecurity: “Tinubu’s govt not working” – Amnesty International alleges

Following the growing killings, kidnappings and insecurity across the country, Amnesty International has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of “not working”.

In a statement issued on Monday, AI said the escalation of attacks and frequent ransom and killings across Northern Nigeria has left the nation and the people unsafe.

The international organisation also noted that these incidents demonstrate the Nigerian government’s failure to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

Highlighting the activities of terrorists, including Boko Haram, Lakurawa among others, AI said it is obvious that the security measures adopted by the current administration appear not to be working.

“The recent escalation of attacks by Lakurawa, Mamuda, Boko Haram, bandits and other armed groups shows that the security measures currently being implemented by President Tinubu’s government are simply not working.

“President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023 — with a promise to enhance security. Instead, things have only gotten worse, as the authorities continue to fail to protect the right to life, physical integrity, liberty and the security of tens of thousands of people across the country,” AI said in the statement.

It added that the Nigerian Constitution, as amended, and international human rights law provide for government authorities to protect their people.

The organisation also noted that these laws mandate the authorities to ensure that those who perpetrate such criminal activities are held to account.

“Under Nigeria’s constitution and international human rights law, the authorities have an obligation to protect lives and ensure that those suspected of perpetrating these killings are held to account, as well as to provide victims with access to justice and effective remedies,” AI added.
