Buhari’s former appointee reveals problem with Nigeria

Amid persistent calls for the restructuring of Nigeria, Waziri Adio, the erstwhile Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), has said that the problem with the country is the people, not the structure.

In a recent interview on Arise TV, monitored by POLITICS NIGERIA, Adio asked Nigerians to check themselves.

“The problem with Nigeria is not the structure or the system that we practice, it is Nigerians themselves,” Adio said.

“We were practicing parliamentary system, we said that was not a good fit for us, we went for the presidential system. Still the same issues [sic].

“What we need to do as Nigerians is that we need the restructuring of the mind, the capacity building.”

An ace journalist and policy strategist, Adio was appointed as the executive secretary of NEITI in 2016 by President Muhammadu Buhari, and left the position in 2021.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election, has said Nigeria would continue to grapple with its current challenges unless it was restructured.

Atiku stated this at the 64th Annual Bible Study Conference of the National Council of Anglican Youth Fellowship of Nigeria held on Thursday at the Ekiti Diocesan Camp Ground, Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Represented by his running mate and Governor of Delta, Ifeanyi Okowa, Atiku who was a Special Guest at the occasion, said the country was in dire need of knowledgeable, capable, and experienced leaders who would break the cycle of failed leadership and take the country to the level of growth and prosperity.
