Political associates of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State are not backing down on their demand for Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to resign from his position.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that Wike’s camp insisted that Ayu must step down for unity to exist in the PDP.
“Governors in Wike’s group demanded that Ayu would have to resign for peace to reign in the party.
“They said he is a divisive figure,” a source close to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who briefed the press after Wike’s strategic meetings in London, said.
Ayu’s resignation has been a major condition in the agenda of Wike’s men, who have chosen not to support Atiku’s candidature after the Adamawa-born politician failed to pick him as running mate.
Wike came second during the party’s presidential primary election in May.
Wike and his team had met with Atiku; Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate; and Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in London, United Kingdom (UK).
Atiku and Wike met over dinner at the park lane Carlton Hotel in London yesterday (Thursday).
Although details of the meeting have not been made public, it is not unrelated to the proposed reconciliation between the two and resolution of the crisis in the opposition party.
