2023 Presidency: Atiku told to quit race

Festus Keyamo (SAN), spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, has mocked Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asking him to step down from the race.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Keyamo’s remarks about Atiku came a day after the presidential hopeful promised that he’ll hand over power to a president of Igbo of extraction on completion of his tenure.

The former Vice-President, who was addressing Southeast PDP stakeholders in Enugu on Tuesday, said: “I am the stepping stone for Igbos to become President of Nigeria”.

He maintained that he would win the 2023 presidential election, adding his ‘great’ relationship with Igbo people would continue.

But reacting to Atiku’s vow via his verified Twitter handle, Keyamo wrote: “Your Excellency, the 14 Northern APC Govs. did not tell these tales by moonlight. They enforced power-shift to the South within our Party instantly this year.

“It’s not too late for you to honour the power-shift arrangement in your own Constitution by stepping down now# Loriiro.”

There had been controversy concerning why the PDP presidency was not zoned to the South in May, especially considering the incumbent Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, comes from the North. Atiku, also a northerner, won the presidential primary election with 371 votes.

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, was runner-up with 237 votes. A former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, came third with 70 votes.

Akwa Ibom State governor, Emmanuel Udom, polled 38 votes, while Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, got 20 votes.
