The Southeast Senate caucus has told the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and write its name in gold.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that on October 13, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja struck out the terrorism charge filed against Kanu.
Giving the judgment, the three-member panel of the appeal court held that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya to Nigeria to stand trial was illegal.
However, following the development, Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), had said the federal government would explore “all available options” to determine the terrorism charge it preferred against the IPOB leader.
The National Security Council, at a recent meeting, had also backed the decision of the federal government.
Reacting to the development in a statement, The Caucus also advised the FG against appealing the ruling at the Supreme Court.
“Accordingly, we as a Caucus and stakeholders in the Nigeria project appeal to Mr President, to remember the promise he made to a delegation of elders of Igboland sometime ago and release Nnamdi Kanu, especially now that the Appeal Court by that ruling removed the burden of interference from him. Going on Appeal would ultimately negate that kind gesture,” the statement reads in part.
Some of the lawmakers who signed the statement include Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Majority Whip), Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Minority Whip), Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), Senator Stella Oduah, Senator Sam Egwu, and Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator T A Orji (Ochendo).
