Residents Lament Over Prolonged Water Scarcity in Several Parts of Abuja

Residents in several communities across the Federal Capital Territory have raised concerns over worsening water scarcity affecting parts of the city.

According to reports, areas such as Ushafa, Bwari and parts of Dutse have experienced little or no water supply for weeks, leaving many residents struggling to access clean water.

Some residents said the situation has forced them to rely on alternative and sometimes unsafe water sources to meet their daily needs.

A resident of Dutse who identified himself as Godswill said the shortage had persisted for nearly a week in his area.

“For almost a week I have not seen water. Since last Thursday, nothing has come out of the tap. I don’t even know what to do again. I have been fetching water from a river across my side,” he said.

Another resident, Dike, expressed frustration over the delay in restoring supply despite earlier assurances.

“Omo, I heard they were working on it and that by Monday we would see water. It’s Tuesday now and still nothing,” he lamented.

Residents believe the problem may be connected to Usuma Dam, which serves as a major source of water supply to several parts of Abuja.

One resident, Victoria Odumu, said her family had earlier connected their home to the Usuma Dam supply in hopes of avoiding water shortages but has now been disappointed.

“I encouraged my parents to connect to the Usuma Dam thinking we would not experience water scarcity, not knowing this one would be the worst,” she said.

Another resident who travelled from Apo to visit his parents in Ushafa said he was shocked by the situation.

“I just came from Apo to visit my parents in Ushafa only to hear that they have not had water for nearly two weeks. Na wa o,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the prolonged water shortage remains unclear, while residents continue to call on authorities to urgently address the situation.
