Prominent Islamic human rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), on Tuesday said it is supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election because “two Muslims are better than one”.
This was contained in a statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA by the Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
The Islamic group while acknowledging that the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is “one of us” said they decided not to support the former vice-president because the APC presented a joint Muslim ticket.
The candidate of the APC is Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with Senator Kashim Shettima his running mate. Both are former governors.
“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a Muslim and a Northerner. He is therefore one of us. But Ahmed Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima are two Muslims. Just as two heads are better than one, two Muslims are better than one.
“Ahmed and Kashim are better than Abubakar and Okonwa.
“We repeat, two Muslims are better than one,” MURIC’s statement reads in part.
MURIC is supporting Muslim-Muslim ticket because two Muslims are better than one. This is religious politics. But Islam is against injustice and inequality which is what Muslim-Muslim ticket represent.
