‘PDP is Gone’ – Akpabio Laughs at Defections in Opposition During Senate Plenary

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, ignited some reactions during Senate plenary session as he openly mocked the crumbling state of Nigeria’s opposition parties.
The drama unfolded while Akpabio was reading an official notification of defection from the former Governor of Sokoto State and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
According to the correspondence, Tambuwal has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The letter also detailed a broader shift in the minority caucus, including resignations from the Labour Party (LP).
As he processed the reading, Akpabio could not hide his amusement at the fragmenting opposition. He paused mid-reading to take a swipe at the struggling parties, remarking on the steady exodus of lawmakers.
“Oh, PDP is gone!” Akpabio exclaimed, laughing as he addressed the floor.
The Senate President didn’t stop with the PDP. After noting further resignations from the Labour Party, he added, “Even Labor Party is dead. I’ve read about three different political parties now.”
The Senate President used the moment to dismiss allegations that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is orchestrating the internal crises within the opposition.
He argued that the instability seen in the PDP, LP, and APGA is a result of their own internal leadership failures.
“You cannot accuse the ruling party of tampering with their leadership because here you have APGA, you have Labor, you have MVP, and all those things. So all of them have a problem. They’ve not been able to put their parties together. So APC cannot be blamed for this,” Akpabio stated.
He concluded by noting that while the opposition struggles to maintain a unified front, the APC remains focused on governance.
