The presidential flag-bearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, on Friday called on Nigerian governors to disregard President Muhammadu Buhari’s order that N500 and N1,000 notes are illegal tenders.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Buhari announced on Thursday that the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no longer legal tender and that his administration would only accept the old N200 until April 10.
This announcement was met with stiff opposition by governors of Kaduna and Kano states, Nasir El-Rufai and Abdullahi Ganduje respectively.
In a circular shared by an APC presidential campaign spokesperson Dele Alake, the former Lagos governor urged “friendly governors” to follow suit with El-Rufai’s stance. El Rufai had asked residents of Kaduna State to continue spending the old Naira notes (N500 and N1,000).
The circular added the Supreme Court must have the final say.
“All friendly governors must replicate Kaduna address immediately to assure the integrity of the SC (Supreme Court) and (the) rule of law for the local and international community. This is the essence of constitutional federation with the SC having final say and follows USA best practice,” the circular read.
