Two days to the 2023 general election in Nigeria, the Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Ohofia Agba Ward, Ishielu Local Government Area (LGA) of Ebonyi State, Monday Idoko, has been killed by some ‘Unknown Gunmen’.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the incident happened in the early hours of Thursday in Ishielu area.
Chika Nwoba, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state confirmed the murder on Thursday afternoon.
“The Chairman of APGA in Ohoffia, Ishielu LGA, Ebonyi State was killed early hours of today in Ishielu by some unknown armed men. May his soul rest in peace,” the PDP chieftain wrote on his known Facebook page.
A source also said: “The story is very traumatic. It was a family member that alerted me that some unknown armed persons came to their house in the wee hours of the day, broke in and dragged him out before shooting him on the head.
“They wanted to rush him to the hospital but he died in the village. We have been in a mourning mood since.”
This newspaper reports that politicians and prominent individuals have been targets of gunmen attacks in the South-east in recent times, especially during the electioneering for the 2023 election.
The ‘Unknown Gunmen’ criminal group has claimed responsibility for most attacks, while authorities say they are armed Biafra agitators.
The killings are coming at a time a diaspora-based Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, is encouraging revolt against the electoral process and calling for an election boycott in Nigeria’s southeast region.
