JUST IN: Kano Governor Yusuf Sacks Deputy Gwarzo as Education Commissioner

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has removed his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from his position as Commissioner for Higher Education following a major restructuring of the education sector in the state.

The development comes after the governor scrapped the Ministry of Higher Education and merged it with the Ministry of Education.

The decision effectively ends Gwarzo’s role as a commissioner in the state cabinet. The restructuring is part of what the government described as efforts to strengthen the coordination of policies and accelerate reforms in the education system.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, the defunct Ministry of Higher Education will now function under the Ministry of Education through a newly created directorate dedicated to tertiary education management.

The statement said: “The directorate will be headed by a Permanent Secretary and supported by the necessary personnel to ensure effective management of higher education institutions in the state.”

It further explained that all agencies previously operating under the former Higher Education Ministry will now return to the Ministry of Education.

The statement added: “Under this restructuring, all agencies under the defunct Higher Education Ministry such as Scholarship Board will return to the Ministry of Education while state owned universities and other Higher Education Institute will also be supervised by the new Directorate under the merged ministry.”

Government officials said the restructuring forms part of wider reforms aimed at improving governance in the education sector.

According to the statement: “The move is part of the state government’s ongoing State of Education sector reform, aimed at repositioning the sector, eliminating duplication of responsibilities, improving policy coordination across all levels of education and reducing cost of governance.”

Governor Yusuf said the restructuring would help reduce administrative costs while improving efficiency and accountability in the management of education in the state.
