Gombe football chief demands sacking of Super Eagles coach Peseiro, cites employment error

The campaign for the removal of Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, is intensifying as Ahmed Shaibu Gara-Gombe, the former Chairman of Gombe State Football Association, has joined the call for his dismissal.

POLITICS NIGERIA learnt Gara-Gombe is urging the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to end Peseiro’s contract due to the coach’s lack of impact on the team since his appointment in May 2022.

Gara-Gombe criticized Peseiro’s lack of philosophy, character, pattern, or purpose, calling his employment a mistake that should not be repeated.

He said: “In the first place, employing him was wrong, not to talk of giving him another contract. His past was characterised by failure, and he has maintained his tradition with the Super Eagles.

“The best thing is to invoke the termination clause of the contract and sack him. NFF shouldn’t wait until he does more damage. Under Peseiro, the Super Eagles are without philosophy, character, pattern, or purpose.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. We have given so much to him, but we are getting less. Instead, we are losing matches all the time.”

The Super Eagles have suffered six defeats out of nine matches under Peseiro’s leadership, including a recent 1-0 loss to Guinea Bissau during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

According to reports, Peseiro, who previously coached Sporting CP, SC Braga, and Panathinaikos, earns $70,000 a month. Many Nigerian football enthusiasts believe that such an ‘exorbitant’ salary is unwarranted given the team’s poor performance.
