Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Tuesday said some lawyers representing the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), were arrested recently by security operatives because they tried to forge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) documents to be used in their legal battle against the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Speaking during a media chat, monitored by POLITICS NIGERIA, Governor Wike said the police only did their job.
“There is nothing wrong if you have intelligence that people are producing INEC documents in a hotel,” Wike said.
“INEC documents in a hotel? That is wrong. And police arrested them. What is expected is that police should investigate them. Were they really printing INEC documents or not?”
Governor Wike added: “In their usual propaganda, they (the APC) said on TV that their lawyers were arrested while preparing election petition. When lawyers perpetrate a crime, can’t they be arrested?”
Furthermore, Wike criticised legal practitioners in the country for ‘interfering’ in the matter ‘without knowing the facts’.
