Labour Party Fixes Dates for Presidential, Governorship Primaries Ahead of 2027 Elections

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has approved the timetable for its primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

At a statutory NEC meeting held on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, and observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party, in compliance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines, confirmed that the submission of its membership register to INEC will take place on 15 April, while the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries are scheduled for 15 May. The presidential primary election is set for 23 May 2026.

The NEC also ratified the National Leadership’s conduct of Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses on 26, 28, and 31 March respectively, as well as the National Convention slated for 11 April 2026.

As the highest decision-making organ of the party after the National Convention, the council reviewed recent developments, including an alleged invasion of the party secretariat by hoodlums reportedly sponsored by rogue elements.

Following a report from the Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Comrade Salisu Mohammed, BoT Secretary, the NEC exercised its disciplinary powers to suspend members involved in acts of indiscipline, anti-party activities, and complicity in the desecration of the party’s National Secretariat.

The council also approved the expansion of the party’s membership register through a hybrid approach, combining digital registration with manual registration in rural communities.

This initiative is aimed at modernising the party’s database, strengthening participatory democracy, and improving transparency and efficiency in administration, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Finally, NEC resolved that all existing vacancies within party structures will be filled through the appointment of interim leadership to ensure continuity in administration.
