Did Peter Obi delete his tweet announcing his resignation from PDP? [FACT CHECK]

Social media has been busy with claims that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, never withdrew his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Several posts have alleged that Obi had deleted a tweet he made regarding his resignation from the PDP. These claims have continued to circulate online, even months after the supposed incident.

One post has even suggested that Obi’s withdrawal from the PDP may have been prompted by the All Progressives Party’s (APC) filing, which stated that he was not eligible to contest because he was not a member of the LP as per section 77 of the Electoral Act 2022. The post further claimed that one must be a registered member of a political party 30 days before the primary election.

It is important to note that Obi came in third place in an election that was won by the candidate of the ruling APC, Bola Tinubu, with Atiku Abubakar of the PDP coming in second. The PDP and Labour have challenged the results of the election in court.

On May 25th, 2022, Obi announced his resignation from the PDP and subsequently withdrew from the party’s presidential primaries in a tweet. Two days later, he announced his intention to contest the 2023 election under the Labour Party.

However, POLITICS NIGERIA has confirmed that the tweet announcing his resignation has not been deleted. Obi’s verified Twitter handle shows that the tweet is still available on the platform, contradicting claims made on social media.
