Tension in Kano as Sanusi, Bayero, Kwankwaso Hold Separate Eid Prayers

Kano State witnessed an unusual development during this year’s Eid-el-Fitr celebration, as three separate prayer gatherings were held across the city.
The situation reflects deepening divisions within both the traditional institution and the political class in the state.
The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led the Eid prayer at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground in the early hours of the morning. The prayer attracted key government officials and a large number of residents.
Among those present were Governor Abba Yusuf, senior members of the state executive, and top security officials. The sermon delivered during the gathering focused on unity, peace, and the need for harmony among the people.
At about the same time, the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, held a separate prayer session at the Nasarawa Palace. The prayer was led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa and also drew prominent personalities.
Those in attendance included notable government figures and political stakeholders aligned with the emir. The message at the prayer centre was centred on peace, stability, and continued support for leadership in the state.
In a similar development, the National Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, observed Eid prayers at his private residence mosque along Miller Road.
He was joined by close political associates, including the Deputy Governor and other loyalists. The gathering was described as calm, reflective, and focused on gratitude and spiritual renewal.
The occurrence of three separate Eid prayers highlights the growing tension in Kano. The division can be traced to the emirate crisis that began in 2020, which led to the removal of Sanusi II and the appointment of Bayero.
However, the situation took another turn in 2024 with the reinstatement of Sanusi II, creating parallel claims to the emirship.
