2027: Group Urges Tinubu to Ensure Free, Fair Elections, Warns Against Intimidation

A coalition of independent election observers has expressed concern over the safety of its members, urging authorities to guarantee their protection and ensure a credible electoral process nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The call was made on Monday by Lazarus Nwachukwu, who led a national delegation of independent observers drawn from groups including the Centre for the Promotion of Peace and Unity, the National Council of NGOs and Civil Society Organisations of Nigeria, and the Forum of Independent Election Observers of Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Bashiru Mohammed on behalf of the delegation and made available to journalists, Nwachukwu called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies to ensure the elections are conducted without intimidation, harassment, or misuse of state institutions.

He stressed that election observers must be allowed to operate freely before, during, and after the polls, noting that their role is critical to strengthening democracy and boosting public confidence in the electoral process.

“We will not allow anyone, regardless of status, to intimidate or undermine the work of this delegation,” Nwachukwu said, reaffirming the group’s commitment to impartiality and transparency.

He added that the delegation comprises experienced professionals with decades of expertise in election monitoring, and follows established procedures such as notifying electoral and security agencies, conducting courtesy visits, and holding press briefings at different stages of the process.

According to him, the observers will independently monitor electoral activities and submit comprehensive reports to relevant authorities and stakeholders to enhance Nigeria’s democratic system.

Nwachukwu further disclosed plans to deploy up to 5,000 independent observers for the 2027 elections, in line with international best practices.

He also urged Nigerians to cooperate with observer teams nationwide, emphasising that public support is essential for ensuring transparency and accountability during the elections.
