BREAKING: Ex-AGF Abubakar Malami accuses EFCC of unlawfully invading his properties

The office of Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of unlawfully invading properties linked to him.

In a statement issued on Monday by Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami’s special assistant on media, the former AGF alleged that EFCC operatives stormed his residential and business premises without a valid court order.

Doka said EFCC officials, accompanied by heavily armed security personnel, forcefully entered and marked the properties. He added that two persons were taken into custody during the operation.

The statement said the incident occurred shortly after Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, paid a solidarity visit to Malami at his residence.

Doka said the timing of the operation raises concerns about its intent and possible political undertones, adding that the case involving the properties is still pending before the federal high court in Abuja.

According to him, the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/20/2026 and presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, has not reached a final determination. Doka also claimed that the interim forfeiture order earlier obtained by the EFCC had expired.

His words: “The ex parte order granted on January 6, 2026 was expressly time-bound for a period of 14 days, which had already elapsed. That order has since lapsed and cannot, under any stretch of the law, justify the EFCC’s actions today.

“This is nothing short of a flagrant disregard for the rule of law, a gross abuse of power, and a dangerous precedent in a constitutional democracy.

“It represents a calculated attempt to harass, intimidate, and embarrass Malami, evidently on account of his political affiliations.”

The statement said Malami supports accountability and the fight against corruption but insisted that such efforts must be carried out within the framework of the law.

Doka added that the former AGF will continue to cooperate with lawful judicial processes and defend his rights through legal channels.

He also called on Nigerians and the international community to take note of the development and its implications for the rule of law and democratic governance in the country.
