Gunmen have launched a brazen attack on a checkpoint near the State Police Command headquarters in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the incident occurred on Monday night at the bustling Union Bank roundabout, just a stone’s throw away from the command’s location.
According to sources, the armed assailants opened fire on the police officers manning the checkpoint, resulting in the death of an inspector. Two other police officers were also shot during the attack, but fortunately, they survived.
The injured officers were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention.
This newspaper learnt that despite multiple attempts to obtain an official response from the police, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, remained unreachable.
