Teargas canister allegedly fired by mobile policemen in Osogbo, Osun state capital, Tuesday afternoon.
The incident sent about 20 students of Fakunle Government Secondary School to the hospital.
Pandemonium broke out in the school along Ikirun road in the morning when the smoke of teargas was allegedly fired by mobile policemen adjacent to the police station.
Politics Nigeria gathered that the mobile policemen fired teargas in their usual practice of mourning fallen heroes and the explosion mistakenly ran into the school.
It was gathered that some students who were hard hit by the smoke fainted and were rushed to the hospital.
A teacher who preferred not to be mentioned in print explained that the private hospital behind the school could not accommodate all the affected students and they were rushed to Uniosun teaching hospital.
He explained that the school authority ordered the immediate closure of the school when he noticed that the smoke was becoming unbearable.
The spokesperson of the police in the state, Yemisi Opalola, said she was yet to be aware of the incident.
She promised to find out the reason for the alleged shooting of teargas.
Meanwhile, the State Ministry of Education has assured that the situation had been brought under control.
Permanent Secretary in charge of the ministry, Adelani Aderinola, who spoke through the Information Officer, Roseline Olawuni said the mobile policemen were holding a memorial exercise in honour of their fallen colleagues in Benue state.
