The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has directed workers across the country to halt operations in shipping companies and initiate an indefinite nationwide strike beginning Monday.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the move comes as a result of an ongoing dispute between the union and shipping companies, primarily centred around the inadequate pay package and welfare concerns of employees.
During a press briefing held on Thursday, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, the President-General of MWUN, expressed deep frustration over the prolonged battle with shipping companies regarding the establishment of a minimum standard for workers’ welfare, dating back to 2018.
According to him, despite repeated ultimatums and the intervention efforts of former Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, the multinational shipping companies have shown no willingness to address the pressing concerns.
