“Tinubu protects critics, you arrest yours” – Group blasts Bago over media crackdown

The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu Continuity 2027 has slammed the governor of Niger State, Umar Bago over the alleged clampdown on the media and critics in the state.
The National Chairman of the group, Sani Ahmad in a statement issued on Wednesday said the attention of the leadership of concerned democratic stakeholders has been drawn to the disturbing trend of alleged arrests and intimidation of journalists and media practitioners in Niger State.
Calling on the governor to respect the rule of law and the members of the fourth estate, Ahmad said it is important for Bago to understand that democracy thrives on open dialogue, dissenting opinions, and constructive criticism.
Also noting that President Bola Tinubu has consistently preached tolerance, inclusiveness, and respect for democratic values, Ahmad said all critics and opposition members must be protected in line with the provisions of the law.
According to Ahmad, any action perceived as suppression of these rights at the state level not only undermines the nation’s democratic principles but also batters the image of the current administration under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“We remind His Excellency that no democratic leader is above criticism. Past and present leaders, including the late Muhammadu Buhari, have endured public scrutiny in the spirit of democracy. Resorting to arrests and intimidation only deepens public distrust and weakens democratic institutions.
“It is also important to note that concerns have been raised by reputable bodies such as the International Press Institute Nigeria regarding the state of press freedom. Such developments, if left unchecked, may attract wider national and international attention,” Ahmad said.
He further called on the Niger State governor to, as a matter of urgency, halt any actions that infringe on press freedom, ensure that all law enforcement actions strictly comply with due process, and promote an atmosphere of tolerance, dialogue, and democratic engagement.
He added that failure of the governor to address these concerns may necessitate further escalation to relevant authorities at the federal level.
