JUST IN: Police Seal Off Nasarawa Assembly After Emergence of Two Speakers

The police have cordoned off the Nasarawa House of Assembly Complex.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the move comes in response to the emergence of two speakers for the seventh assembly, creating a tense situation.

The previous Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, who was vying for a third term, and Hon. Daniel Ogazi, a representative of the Kokona East constituency in the Assembly, were both elected as speakers during simultaneous sessions on Tuesday.

Balarabe-Abdullahi secured his position at a gathering held at the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, while Ogazi assumed the role of Speaker through proceedings at the State Assembly complex.

Reports suggest that thirteen members-elect, including those from opposition political parties, rallied behind Ogazi, a member of the All Progressives Congress.

On the other hand, eleven members remained loyal to Balarabe-Abdullahi, who also belongs to the APC in the state.

When questioned about the reason for sealing off the assembly complex, DSP Ramhan Nansel, the state Police Public Relations Officer, released a statement on Wednesday.

He explained that the police action was carried out following a directive from the state Commissioner of Police, Maiyaki Mohammed-Baba. The decision was made after consultations with other security agencies in the state, he added.
