‘Stop Twisting the Law!’ — Tinubu Accuses Opposition of Misleading Nigerians on Electoral Act

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accused opposition parties of distorting the Electoral Act for political gain.
Politics Nigeria reports that he spoke on Friday in Abuja during the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The President said the ongoing criticism of the Electoral Act 2026 was misleading and unfair to Nigerians.
Addressing party delegates at Eagle Square, Tinubu said the law should not be turned into a tool for political propaganda. He warned that constant attacks on the Act could weaken public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system.
According to him, while criticism is part of democracy, it must be based on facts.
“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people,” he said.
The President explained that the Electoral Act did not emerge overnight. He noted that it went through a detailed legislative process. This included debates, committee reviews, and public hearings across the country.
He stressed that the National Assembly, which passed the law, was elected by Nigerians and acted within its constitutional powers.
“It is public knowledge that the processes leading to the amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearings. The Electoral Act was passed by the National Assembly, elected by the Nigerian people in accordance with the Constitution,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu said claims that the law is anti-democratic ignore these steps. He added that such narratives could create unnecessary doubt about the credibility of elections.
According to him, the Act represents a national effort to improve transparency and strengthen the electoral system.
“The Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule,” he said.
The President’s remarks come at a time of rising political tension. Opposition parties have raised concerns about recent developments in the political space. These include the increasing number of defections to the ruling APC. Some critics argue that this trend could weaken opposition voices and reduce political competition.
Tinubu, however, dismissed these concerns. He described them as deliberate attempts to misrepresent both the Electoral Act and his administration’s intentions.
He maintained that constructive engagement, not misinformation, is what the country needs.
In a direct response to claims that Nigeria could slide into a one-party state, the President rejected the idea. He said the APC has no such agenda and remains committed to democratic principles.
“Let me reiterate, especially to those who often lament and misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state,” he said.
He also spoke on the role of opposition in governance. Tinubu said a strong opposition is necessary for accountability and better leadership. He noted that policies improve when leaders are questioned and challenged.
“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition. As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved,” he added.
The APC currently holds significant political influence across the country. The party controls the presidency, maintains a majority in the National Assembly, and governs most states. This dominance has continued to grow with the steady influx of politicians from opposition parties.
Tinubu described the wave of defections as a sign of confidence in the APC. He said more Nigerians are aligning with the party because of its policies and direction.
According to him, the development reflects growing trust in the leadership of the ruling party.
At the same time, the President warned party members against complacency. He said political strength must be matched with performance and accountability. He stressed that dominance alone does not guarantee success or stability.
Moreover, President Tinubu urged party leaders to remain focused on delivering results for Nigerians. He also called for unity within the APC as it prepares for future political challenges.
