The Chairman of the Interim Management Committee in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Markus Artu, has issued a strict 24-hour curfew after a deadly assault on residents Sunday night.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Artu declared, “All vehicular movement is hereby suspended until further notice. Only authorised security personnel and essential workers will be permitted to travel.”
Tragically, the attack resulted in numerous fatalities and the wanton destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
According to a reliable source who spoke with Sun newspaper, the violence erupted when a corpse was brought into a local mosque, triggering a wave of machete-wielding attackers who indiscriminately targeted innocent residents.
“Our house is located near the mosque, and by God’s grace, we narrowly escaped being victims of the brutal machete attacks,” the source recounted while seeking refuge at the Palace of Mishkaham Mangu, in close proximity to the Mangu Police Station. “We are anxiously waiting, relying on divine intervention to protect us.”
Mr. Lawrence Kyarshik, the National Director of Public Affairs, confirmed the disturbing incident, stating, “Mangu town is currently in a state of confusion, gripped by fear and uncertainty.”
Speaking with journalists, Bala Fwangji, the representative for the Mangu South constituency, further validated the gravity of the situation. He expressed deep concern, revealing, “Our people are under siege in Mangu. They are mercilessly attacking and killing innocent individuals without remorse. The violence began in the Bwai community earlier today, spread to Mangu town, and has now engulfed Sabon Gari.”
Fwangji urgently pleaded for assistance, emphasising, “Our people are in desperate need of help. In response, the Local Government authority has implemented a 24-hour curfew across the entire LGA to contain the situation.”
