JUST IN: ADC welcomes Kwankwaso, describes former Kano governor as “game changer”

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the defection of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state and the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election.

In a statement on Monday, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the ADC, described Kwankwaso as a “game changer”.

Abdullahi said the former Kano governor’s entry into the party signals a growing coalition seeking political change ahead of future elections.

“The African Democratic Congress warmly welcomes the decision of former Governor of Kano State and Presidential Candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 General Election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join our party at this important moment in our country’s journey,” the party stated.

He said Kwankwaso has also encouraged members of his political movement and supporters nationwide to join the ADC.

“As part of this move, he has also encouraged members of his political movement and supporters across the country to join the ADC, adding strength to this growing coalition for change,” Abdullahi said.

The party said the development has already reflected in a surge of new registrations on its online membership platform within the last 24 hours.

According to the statement, Kwankwaso’s defection was witnessed by key leaders of the party. Those present included sENATOR David Mark, national chairman of the ADC; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, national secretary; Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president; Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra state; and Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation.

Also present were Senator Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River state, and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto state.

“In the last 24 hours alone, the ADC’s online registration platform has seen a significant surge in new members. This is a clear sign that more Nigerians are beginning to align with a different path forward,” the party stated.
