Majority and Minority Leaders Expected to Emerge as Senate Resumes Plenary on Tuesday

The Senate set to resume sitting on Tuesday following the Eid-el Kabir holiday, with the majority and minority leaders expected to emerge.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the largest number of members, is expected to produce the majority leader, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will produce the minority leader.

With seven political parties represented in the 10th Senate, the APC holds 59 seats, the PDP has 36, and other parties have a combined total of 14 seats.

The ruling APC and the minority caucus are also expected to fill the vacant eight principal positions.

The APC will secure the majority leader, deputy majority leader, chief whip, and deputy chief whip positions, while the four principal positions designated for the minority caucus, including the minority leader, deputy minority leader, minority whip, and deputy minority whip, are expected to be filled by the PDP.

Notable contenders for the position of Senate Majority Leader include Senators Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti) and Mohammed Ndume (APC-Borno), who played key roles in Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s campaign. Meanwhile, Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP-Kebbi) and Aminu Tambuwal (PDP-Sokoto) are contenders for the minority leader position.

The nomination and selection process for these positions is the responsibility of the political parties.
