The Federal Government, through the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja, has predicted flash floods in several states across the country.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the forecast indicates that heavy rainfall between July 4 and 8, 2023, may result in devastating floods.
The statement highlights various areas that are particularly susceptible to flooding within five days.
These include Langtang and Shendam in Plateau State, Sumaila and Tudun Wada in Kano State, Shagari, Goronyo, and Silame in Sokoto State, Okwe in Delta State, and Kachia in Kaduna State. Additional areas at risk include Upenekang in Akwa Ibom State, Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-belwa, Jimeta, and Yola in Adamawa State, Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina State, Wara, Yelwa, and Gwandu in Kebbi State, Shinkafi and Gummi in Zamfara State, Briyel in Borno State, Gwaram in Jigawa State, Jebba in Kwara State, and Mashegu and Kontagora in Niger State.
The government urges all relevant stakeholders to take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property in these at-risk areas.
This alert comes in the wake of a previous warning issued by the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) in June.
FEMA had cautioned about the arrival of strong winds in several states neighbouring the Federal Capital Territory. Proximity to the Federal Capital Territory puts Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna at risk, along with Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Borno, and Adamawa states. The forecast indicates a moderate risk of hazards due to the forceful winds.
FEMA emphasised that the powerful winds could displace individuals and cause isolated damage to vulnerable structures.
