Abia Govt Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Stage Protest Against Governor Otti

The Abia State Government has raised concern over what it described as a planned protest aimed at disrupting peace in the state and targeting Governor Alex Otti.

The government said the move is politically motivated and could trigger unrest if not checked.

This position was made public on Friday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

He said intelligence available to the state points to an organised effort by certain political actors to stage a protest under a controversial slogan.

According to him, those behind the move are allegedly mobilising individuals, including suspected miscreants from Aba and nearby states, to participate in the demonstration.

The planned protest is reportedly tagged “Tinubu Dey Work, Otti Dey Chop,” a phrase the government believes is designed to mislead the public.

Ekeoma explained that the aim of the protest is to push what he called a false narrative that the Federal Government is funding ongoing projects in Abia State.

He insisted that such claims are not true, noting that the state government had already addressed the issue of federal reimbursements.

He added that the protest may not be peaceful as being portrayed. Instead, it could be a setup to create confrontation between the protesters and security agencies, especially the State Task Force operating in Aba. This, he warned, could spiral into violence and lead to loss of lives and property.

“The alleged plot is designed to trigger confrontation between the protesters and security operatives, particularly the State Task Force in Aba, which could escalate into violence, loss of lives, and a breakdown of law and order.

“The government warns that such actions may be part of efforts to create instability in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“While we reaffirm our commitment to democratic principles and tolerance of opposition, we will take decisive action against any individual or group found attempting to endanger public safety under the guise of political expression”.

The government stressed that it is not against lawful protests or opposing views. However, it maintained that any attempt to use protest as a cover to cause chaos will not be tolerated.

It also appealed to parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against being used for political purposes that may put their lives at risk. Residents were urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities without fear.

The state government further assured the public that it remains committed to protecting lives and property.
