Police Launch Manhunt After 11 Killed in Nasarawa Communal Clash

The Nasarawa State Police Command has commenced a manhunt for those responsible for a deadly communal clash in the Udege Development Area of Nasarawa Local Government Area, which claimed no fewer than 11 lives and left several homes in ruins.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, on Friday, April 3, visited the affected communities of Akyawa and Udege Kasa, where he sympathised with victims and evaluated the extent of damage caused by the attack.

The violence, which broke out in the early hours of the same day, was allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums in what authorities believe to be a reprisal following the reported killing of two individuals.

Reports indicate that about 50 houses were set ablaze in Akyawa, while two others were destroyed in Udege Kasa.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, the police commissioner expressed condolences to the bereaved families and reassured residents of the command’s resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and destruction of property.

“The Command is committed to ensuring that those behind this act are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted,” he stated.

In response, the CP ordered the immediate deployment of tactical teams and investigative units to apprehend those involved.

He also directed a reinforced security presence in the area, with the police collaborating with the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to restore peace.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in the community, Mohammed urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support ongoing investigations.

Police authorities added that calm has been restored in the area, noting that proactive measures have been implemented to prevent a recurrence of such violence in the affected communities.
