A fresh round of crisis is expected in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over who succeeds the suspended national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu.
Since Ayu was suspended after the PDP lost the presidential election in March, the deputy national chairman (north), Umar Damagum, has been in acting capacity.
However, efforts by stakeholders of the party to replace the suspended national chairman have amplified the fault lines.
Politics Nigeria understands that some allies of Atiku Abubakar and those of the suspended Ayu are working towards ensuring that one of theirs emerges as the new chairman.
Loyalists and associates of Nyesom Wike, who is set to become a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, are making moves to foil Atiku’s plans.
Meanwhile, there is the understanding among party leaders and members that the north-central zone will still produce the new national chairman.
Former Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki, is Atiku’s candidate for national chairman of the PDP while Wike and his team are rooting for Jerry Gana.
