Members of the Katsina state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) shutdown the state capital to protest federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidy.
This is even as the NLC chapters in other states are protesting the untold hardship imposed on Nigerians since President Bola Tinubu announced end to fuel subsidy in the country.
At the protest in Katsina on Wednesday, the members, among who were those from various affiliated unions, had met at the state headquarters before proceeding on a march to other locations.
According to the Katsina NLC chairman, Hussaini Hamisu, the protest march would see members move through Steel Rolling Mill roundabout, WTC roundabout after which they would return to the headquarters where he will make a public address.
Hamisu clarified that the Wednesday action was to send a message across on the sufferings of Nigerians.
He added that further actions to be taken after the protest would be determined by the organised Labour national headquarters after it would have studied the reports submitted by the various chapters of the union on the protest.
“Today’s protest is being observed throughout the country and Katsina state has joined. Further actions to be taken will be determined by the NLC national headquarters after each state chapter has submitted its report on the protest and the national headquarters has studied the report,” he said.
“You know, today’s protest is not a strike. This is meant to send a message about hardships being faced by the poor Nigerians due to the Federal Government’s recent decisions among which is the removal of fuel subsidy.”
The state police command had deployed some of its operatives in various parts of the state capital, including the NLC main entrance.
