Ex-Lawmaker Agbonayinma Resigns from APC in Edo

A former member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma, on Wednesday announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State.

Agbonayinma disclosed his decision during a press briefing in Benin City, stating that he would soon reveal the political platform on which he intends to contest in the next general election.

The former lawmaker, who is seeking a return to the National Assembly, cited several reasons for his exit, including alleged lack of respect for his leadership in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, marginalisation of Edo South in political appointments, and what he described as undemocratic practices within the party.

Agbonayinma, a former member of the Code of Conduct Bureau, said he could no longer remain in a party where internal democracy was being undermined. He alleged that individuals who worked against the APC during elections were now influencing decisions within the party.

“As a foundation member from the days of AC, ACN, ACD, now APC, we worked diligently to build an all-inclusive democratic institution,” he said.

“It is deeply distressing to witness the party in our constituency gradually becoming the property of a few individuals who are interfering undemocratically in party affairs in Ikpoba-Okha.”

He added that after a careful assessment of recent developments, he decided to resign his membership of the APC with immediate effect, describing the move as difficult but necessary in line with his personal convictions and vision for service.

Despite his resignation, Agbonayinma expressed appreciation for members of the party, maintaining that his commitment to public service, democratic values, and the development of Edo State and Nigeria remains unchanged.

His exit is expected to come as a surprise to many supporters and party stakeholders in the state, given his strong influence in Ikpoba-Okha and his visible role in party activities.

Agbonayinma is known to be a supporter of Governor Monday Okpebholo and has been vocal in promoting the administration’s achievements, as well as leading campaigns against cultism in secondary schools.

However, sources suggest that internal party dynamics, including perceived sidelining in his local government, may have contributed to his decision to leave the APC.
