The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Nigeria’s general elections, Adewole Adebayo, has called on the military junta in the Niger Republic to surrender and return to the barracks.
In a tweet on Thursday, August 10, Adebayo argued that the coupists have no constitutional standing to take over the government of Niger Republic because the people never elected them.
In his view, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is on the good side of history.
The Nigerian politician who said Eastern imperialism is no remedy for the imperialism of the West insisted that African nationalism must be on the grounds of democracy.
His tweet read:
“I call on the junta in Niger to surrender now and return to the barracks under amnesty. You cannot rule unelected by Nigériens.
“@ecowas_cedeao is on the good side of history. Imperialism of the East is no remedy for imperialism of the West. African nationalism must be democratic.”
Currently, both ECOWAS and the coup plotters are yet to meet at a common ground on the crisis in the West African country.
While the regional body proposes military intervention, the junta threatens to kill deposed President Mohammed Bazoum if that happens.
