The University of Jos (UNIJOS), on Wednesday, approved the instalment payment and a further reduction of fees for its students, weeks after they took to their campus to protest, demanding a reversal of the fee hike.
The university also said that two-thirds of the amount payable by all students would be dedicated to assisting needy students.
It said 50 per cent will be channelled towards providing scholarships for disadvantaged students while the other 50 per cent will be utilized to expand its work-study programme.
The university raised fees from about ₦45,000 to ₦160,000 for returning students and ₦200,000 for new entrants., sparking protests.
In a notice, the university said:
“This is to inform Students of the University of Jos, Parents and members of the public that the University Administration has approved a further revision in the School Charges structure payable by Undergraduate Students of the institution from the 2022/2023 Academic Session.
“The University Administration approved a reduction in the charges following a meeting with the expanded Students Union Government Executives of the University.”
The varsity said the decision came after a meeting with student union government executives.
UNIJOS said the main charges for returning students not offering GST courses have been reduced from ₦150,000 to ₦95,000, while ₦100,000 will be paid by returning students offering GST courses.
Fresh students will now pay ₦130,000, down from the initial charge of ₦180,000.
Laboratory/studio/workshop charges are now set at ₦25,000 for students who exclusively use these facilities, down from ₦30,000.
The university administration said it has also introduced instalment payments.
It said all returning students not using laboratory/studio/workshop facilities and not offering GST courses are to pay ₦95,000 as the first and ₦10,000 as the second instalment.

UNIJOS added that all returning students without GST courses who use laboratory/studio/workshop facilities are to pay ₦95,000 as the first instalment and ₦35,000 as the second instalment.

The varsity added that the deadline for the registration exercise has been extended by two weeks.
It said the new deadline is now October 8, 2023.
