BREAKING: El-Rufai to Remain in Custody as Court Adjourns Bail Application to June

A Kaduna State High Court has ordered that former governor Nasir El-Rufai remain in custody. The court adjourned his bail application to the first week of June 2026.
The ruling was delivered by Justice Darius Khobo on Tuesday. The judge said more time was needed to review arguments presented by both sides.
El-Rufai is currently facing trial over allegations of financial misconduct. The case was brought before the court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
The anti-graft agency accused the former governor of abuse of office and mismanagement of public funds during his time in office.
At the hearing, counsel to El-Rufai urged the court to grant bail. They argued that their client would not jump bail and is willing to cooperate with the court. They also stated that he has a known address and strong ties within the country.
However, the prosecution opposed the request. Lawyers representing the ICPC told the court that the charges against the former governor are serious. They argued that granting bail at this stage could affect the ongoing investigation and trial process.
Justice Khobo, after listening to both sides, declined to give an immediate ruling on the bail application. Instead, he adjourned the matter to June. He directed that El-Rufai be remanded in custody pending the next hearing.
The courtroom was filled with supporters and observers during the session. Security presence was also increased around the court premises.
The case has drawn national attention. El-Rufai remains one of the most prominent political figures in northern Nigeria. His trial is being closely watched by political stakeholders and the public.
Legal analysts say the adjournment suggests the court is taking a careful approach. They believe the outcome of the bail application could shape the pace of the trial.
Meanwhile, the ICPC has maintained that it is committed to ensuring accountability. The agency said it will continue to pursue the case based on available evidence.
El-Rufai is expected to remain in custody until the next hearing date in June.
