Former Chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has questioned the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on why it is not ‘trusting’ the evidence in its possession against the suspended Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, and “test it in court”.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the NDLEA earlier today declared Kyari wanted over alleged links with an international drug cartel.
Femi Babafemi, spokesperson of the NDLEA, said the anti-drug agency decided to declare Kyari wanted because he did not honour the invitation sent to him.
Recall the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had indicted Kyari of conspiring with Ramon Abass ‘Hushpuppi’, a self-confessed international fraudster, in a $1.1 million scam. The suspended police officer had denied the allegation, claiming that his “hands are clean”.
Speaking at a press briefing today, Babafemi said the anti-drug agency strongly believes that “DCP Kyari is a member of a drug cartel that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline”.
Following his indictment in drug dealings, Kyari was arrested by the police.
For Odinkalu, considering the NDLEA has video evidence against Kyari, they shouldn’t have subjected him to “trial by media”.
“I am no fan of #AbbaKyari or of his methods. But he remains a citizen of #Nigeria & shld be neither above the law nor below it. The #PresumptionOfInnocence precludes #TrialByMedia. If @ndlea_nigeria trusts this “evidence”, why can’t they wait to test it in court??” Odinkalu wrote on his known Twitter handle.
Chidi Odinkalu must be investigated for likely culpability. As a lawyer, if he does not know that security agencies do not have to ““test it in court”” before an arrest is perfected. It is the other way round.

The Nigerian security agencies working hard to rid its ranks and file of bad eggs which these RECKLESS HYPOCRITE ACTIVISTS had talked about and agreed with and wanted all the while, perhaps with LIP-SERVICE. Now that the agencies have caught one with strong case in two separate incidents recently and what do we have? FAKE HYPOCRITE ACTIVISTS jumped into the defense of a CRIMINAL OFFICER OF THE LAW.
I HAVE LONG CAME TO A CONCLUSSION THAT WE ARE OUR OWN ENEMIES AND PROBLEMS TO OUR COUNTRY. EVERY NIGERIAN IS CULPABLE AND LIABLE IN ONE WAY OR OTHER TO THE MIRAGE OF ISSUES AND WOES BEDEVILED AND BEFFALING THE COUNTRY NIGERIA.
Everybody and no one are left out. Chidi Odinkalu deserves a SEARCH LIGHT
@Mickykarim, you speak like someone that operate from a beer parlour whose family problem seem to be overwhelming. The Professor’s reaction is far from what you reponded to. I won’t bother to say you much anymore than to read the Prof again, but this time, dispassionately
