The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and undemocratic.
Speaking at the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, ADC Chairman Ralphs Okey Nwosu also condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging Senate President Godswill Akpabio to reinstate her immediately.
Nwosu paid tribute to the late elder statesmen Chief Edwin Clark and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, stating that their warnings about Nigeria’s declining democracy were proving true.
“Today, we owe our democracy and the people of Nigeria a duty—to demand that President Tinubu restore the elected government of Rivers State without delay.
“The emergency rule is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and unjust. Likewise, we call on the Senate President to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, issue a formal apology, and investigate her sexual harassment allegations against Akpabio,” Nwosu said.
He criticized the growing political instability, warning that a few individuals should not be allowed to control a nation of over 200 million people.
“We implore Senator Akpabio and President Tinubu to save our democracy and let Nigerians breathe,” he added.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s political landscape, Nwosu lamented that despite warnings from Clark and Adebanjo, Nigerians allowed themselves to be misled.
“We are not in a military regime, yet Nigerians remain helpless. The 2023 elections saw over 70 million eligible voters, yet Tinubu secured only 8 million votes. Now, with over 100 million voters, our democracy is at risk,” he said.
Nwosu vowed that the ADC and its supporters would resist any further threats to democracy, claiming that many former APC supporters were willing to join their cause.
“As leaders, we must stop the APC from derailing our democracy. With over 80 million Nigerians on our side, we will reclaim this country and position it for greatness,” he declared.
