ABSU Deputy Vice Chancellor Freed After 11 Days in Kidnappers’ Den

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of Abia State University (ABSU), Professor Godwin Emezue, was released by his kidnappers on Tuesday night, February 6, 2024, after 11 days in captivity.

Professor Emezue was abducted at a filling station in Umuahia on January 26. The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N35 million, threatening to kill the professor when negotiations started at N5 million.

Sources close to the family revealed that the kidnappers sent disturbing footage of Professor Emezue being tortured, demanding N20 million by Saturday or face the consequences. They also warned against involving security forces.

The kidnappers later demanded an additional N5 million, claiming they had orders to kill Professor Emezue but could reconsider if the family complied quickly. Under immense pressure, the family reportedly paid N25 million to secure his release.

Professor Emezue is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.
