Abuja-based woman raises alarm over continuous detention of her husband, staff by EFCC

Abuja-based businesswoman, Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac has condemned the continued detention of her husband and several of their staff by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as a flagrant violation of Section 35 of the Nigerian Constitution.

In a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Mrs. Omokamo Godwin-Isaac called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure the rule of law is upheld. She demanded that her husband and staff either be released or formally charged in court.

“It has been 13 days and still counting since my husband and several workers have been detained by EFCC operatives without being prosecuted or released.

“This is a contravention of Section 35 of Nigeria’s Constitution and an infringement on their right to freedom,” she stated.

Mrs. Omokamo Godwin-Isaac condemned the undue detention and called on the EFCC to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

She affirmed that her husband and the others had satisfied all bail conditions required by law, yet they were denied bail.

“It is expected of the EFCC to either release them or charge them to court in accordance with the law rather than keeping them for this long,” she asserted.

Expressing her belief in the democratic leadership qualities of President Tinubu, Mrs. Omokamo Godwin-Isaac appealed for justice to prevail.

She commended the EFCC Chairman for being fair and unbiased in the matter but criticized the Elizabeth Eke-led E&SS department for allegedly refusing to release her husband despite the Chairman’s directive.

“I don’t know her personal interest in the matter that she has refused to obey the law and her boss,” Mrs. Omokamo Godwin-Isaac added.

She also clarified that she and her husband had no prior interactions with the Yesufu family, who are allegedly behind the arrest over non-existent allegations of land grabbing.

She urged the EFCC to focus on their mandate of tackling criminal and corrupt cases and not to overreach their authority.

“My husband and I are people of integrity without any record of corruption or fraud or land grabbing, so I wonder why EFCC should be terrorizing us,” she stated.
