Abuja traders protest killing of young businessman by scavengers

Traders in the Gwagwalada International Timbershade on Monday embarked on a protest following the killing of a young businessman by some scavengers operating in the Federal Capital Territory.

A hub known popularly for buying and selling of building materials, the market also referred to as Pantaker was shut down on Monday.

It was gathered that the deceased was hacked to death by the scavengers, known as Baban bola after he tried to stop them from stealing some building materials on Sunday.

According to an eyewitness, the young trader whose identity is yet to be revealed resisted an attempt by the boys to steal from a construction property near the market.

The eyewitness said the scavengers – about four of them – were trying to cart away with some valuable materials from the said property.

However, when the young trader approached them, they attacked and stabbed him to death before fleeing the scene.

“The market is shut down in a protest by marketers over the killing of a young Igbo man by scavengers, ‘baban bola’, who was killed yesterday (Sunday) after resisting their attempt to steal materials from a property.

“He was descended upon by four of these thieves and was slaughtered after being overpowered,” the eyewitness said.

He added that the market was shut down by traders who are demanding justice for their murdered colleague.

They also called on authorities across the FCT to rein in the burst of scavengers who are littered all over the city.
