The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has accused the Senate of abusing power by refusing to allow Natasha Akpoti, senator representing Kogi Central, to resume her legislative duties.
The Senate, on Tuesday, insisted that her suspension case was still pending in court and that she could not be recalled.
But IPAC described the development as a deliberate attempt to silence the opposition and weaken democracy.
The National Secretary of IPAC, High Chief Peter Ameh, said in a statement: “It is embarrassing that our democracy is being hijacked by those who do not understand its core values—freedom of expression and the right of every constituency to be represented.
“The Senate President and every Senator are equals under the Constitution. To use the authority of the chamber to settle personal scores is a dangerous abuse of power.”
The group said Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senate President, was using his position to persecute Akpoti and deny Kogi Central constituents their right to representation.
IPAC also alleged that the judiciary was enabling the legislature’s excesses by delaying the case, thereby creating room for what it termed “tutelary tyranny”.
The council warned that Nigerians would resist any plot to impose a one-party system ahead of the 2027 elections.
