The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Zamfara State has urged Governor Dauda Lawalto to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was made by the state chairman of the ADC, Kabiru Garba, at a press conference in Gusau, the state capital on Friday.
He described Governor Lawal as a transformative leader whose entry into the ADC would accelerate development in the state and strengthen the growing opposition coalition.
“We want to extend a formal invitation to Gov. Dauda Lawal to join the party to bring more development to the state,” Garba said.
Lawal, who was elected under the PDP banner, is a known ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, one of the key figures behind the newly formed opposition coalition operating under the ADC platform.
Garba disclosed that over 100 political actors from different parties across Zamfara State had already joined the ADC in recent weeks, a move he attributed to the leadership style of the party at both the state and national levels.
According to him, “Doors are widely open to receive all defectors irrespective of their positions. We want to assure everyone of our readiness to give both new and old members equal treatment for effective democratic process.”
He added that the ADC’s growth in Zamfara had been driven by what he described as a culture of justice, fairness, and equal opportunity—values that continue to attract key figures from rival political parties.
“We have received over 100 political actors from various political parties, and we are giving them orientation on the party doctrine to enable them know how to go about their political activities within the party constitution,” Garba said.
He encouraged intending defectors to follow proper procedures by coordinating through their ward leadership before moving to local, state, and federal structures.
“We believe in recognising grassroots politics because that’s the best way to reflect the mandate of the electorate,” he added.
The ADC in Zamfara state is hoping to consolidate an opposition bloc strong enough to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The coalition, which includes politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark, adopted the ADC earlier this week as its platform.
