AFCON: Algeria considers Peseiro after Portuguese coach guided Super Eagles to final

In the wake of Djamel Belmadi’s departure following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is eyeing Portuguese tactician José Peseiro to take over as the next National Team Manager.

The decision comes after Peseiro’s commendable performance as the coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, leading them to the final of the 34th AFCON in his first attempt.

Meanwhile, Algeria, the reigning champions from 2019, struggled in the recent AFCON, finishing at the bottom of their group.

According to Algerian publication DZ Foot, FAF President Walid Sadi is impressed by Peseiro’s coaching credentials and is inclined to engage in discussions with the Portuguese manager regarding the prestigious position.

The shortlist for the role reportedly includes three names: Peseiro, Vladimir Petkovic, and Carlos Queiroz.

Despite recent speculation around Queiroz, it appears that Peseiro has emerged as the preferred choice for President Sadi.

The Portuguese coach’s contract with the Nigeria Football Federation recently concluded.

Algeria, having won the AFCON in 2019, faced disappointment in the 2021 and 2023 editions, failing to progress past the group stage.
