Sunday Igboho’s lawyers address activist’s controversial extradition

'No charges to facilitate Sunday Igboho's extradition yet'

Lawyers representing embattled Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Igboho, have addressed his controversial extradition to Nigeria, as they revealed that there are currently no charges to facilitate that from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

According to the lawyers, who spoke on the matter after the activist made his first appearance at Cour D’Appel De Cotonou after his arrest in Benin Republic, contrary to insinuations, the hearing, which was held on Thursday, July 22, 2021, revealed that there was no extradition agreement between Nigeria and the French-speaking country.

On why the case was adjourned till Monday, July 26, a statement by Communications Manager, Ilana Omo Oodua, Maxwell Adeleye, quoted the lawyers as saying that the move was to give Nigeria more opportunity to bring evidence against the rights activist.

As reported on Politics Nigeria, Igboho, who fled an arrest in Nigeria, for forcefully driving Fulani herdsmen out of Oyo State over their alleged criminal activities, was apprehended by the Beninese government while on his way to Germany.

The activist and his wife, Ropo, were arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, Cotonou.

He is facing charges in the country for obtaining a Beninise passport without being a citizen.

Meanwhile, while Igboho’s wife had been granted bail by the court, the activist was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, pending the forthcoming hearing of his case.
