Embattled Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Igboho has been returned to prison custody pending further investigation.
The Court D’Appal of Cotonou in Benin Republic ordered that the activist should be returned to the cell in the late hours of Monday, July 26, 2021, after a 13-hour trial.
Politics Nigeria, however, learnt that the Beninese court, during the trial that held behind closed doors, declined the immediate extradition of Igboho to Nigeria as requested by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
It would be recalled that on Monday, July 19, Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were arrested by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou on their way to Germany
When they were arraigned last Thursday, the Beninese court adjourned the case till Monday (yesterday) after Igboho’s five lawyers failed to convince the prosecutor that he had no case to answer.
Meanwhile, the court had ordered that Igboho should be transferred to another detention facility. This was after the activist’s lawyers complained that his fundamental human rights were being abused.
