Aisha Yesufu to CBN: Spraying naira never spoilt the money

Aisha Yesufu, activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, has criticised the criminalisation of spraying naira notes at social events.

In a post on Monday via her official X handle, Yesufu described the policy as “one of the dumbest things ever”.

She questioned the rationale behind banning a cultural practice that, according to her, neither damages nor devalues the currency.

“The money was never spoilt. It was still packed up and used,” she said.

“Spraying gave colour to ceremonies and was such a Nigerian thing — one that was even being replicated in other parts of the world.”

Yesufu suggested that the decision may have been influenced by the personal or religious beliefs of policymakers rather than practical concerns.

“Why stop it? Because someone out there decided it was against their beliefs, so it had to be stopped?” she asked.

She added that authorities should instead focus on addressing corruption, economic mismanagement, and abuse of currency within financial institutions.
