The management of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo State, has expelled some students involved in a fight that resulted in the death of a fellow student.
Politics Nigeria reports that a video of some students of the university beating their colleague who allegedly stole a mobile phone went viral on Sunday, May 26.
The deceased was also said to have had his hair forcefully shaved by his assailants after he was reportedly caught with the stolen mobile phone.
A source in the school who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said that the deceased was beaten from 6pm on Friday to about 10am on Saturday.
“They said they caught him with a stolen phone. They started beating him from 6pm yesterday (Friday) until he died at about 10am today (Saturday).”
Some Nigerians had accused the student who maltreated their colleague of belonging to a cult group.
But the university maintained that there is no cultism within the institution.
Public relations officer of the university, Olufemi Atoyebi said that the institution upholds a zero-tolerance policy for any antisocial behaviour or misconduct.
The university emphasised that the expelled students are not affiliated with any cult group.
“What actually happened is that the deceased was alleged to have stolen a mobile telephone, but instead of reporting the issue to the university management, the expelled students could not control their emotions. Their actions led to the unfortunate death of the student,” Atoyebi said.
“The university has taken swift action by handing over all the students involved to the Nigeria Police Force for investigation, with the assurance that justice will be served.
“The university remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a safe, conducive, peaceful, and godly atmosphere for learning,” he added.
