Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sadness over the explosion that rocked Akure, the Ondo state capital, in the early hours of Saturday.
POLITICS NIGERIA learned that the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Saturday along Akure-Owo expressway, a few kilometres from the Akure metropolis.
Speaking after having an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu said the explosion was caused by a vehicle carrying explosives.
According to him, the vehicle was transporting explosives to a storage facility in a neighbouring state when it developed fault along the Akure-Owo road.
Akeredolu said that the personnel who spotted smoke in the vehicle did all they could to extinguish it all to no avail.
However, in a social media post on Saturday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain sympathised with the residents over the explosion.
“I am as concerned as residents of Akure, Ondo State following the explosion of today.
“It’s my hope that relevant government agencies working with security agencies will quickly get to the bottom of what happened to reassure the citizens of the safety of their lives and properties,” he wrote on Saturday.
