Alarming surge in kidnappings sparks concerns among residents of Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is witnessing a worrying increase in insecurity, particularly kidnappings, causing growing apprehension among residents and authorities.

Once considered immune to prevalent security challenges, Abuja is grappling with an escalating wave of criminal activities.

Despite efforts by security agencies, the capital city has recorded close to 50 kidnapping cases involving over 200 individuals in the last three years.

According to a 2020 report by SB Morgen, Abuja was ranked 11th among locations with frequent abductions. The severity of the issue is evident in the data from January 2021 to June 2023, with approximately 40 recorded cases impacting 236 victims.

Recent incidents include the abduction of eight residents and two hotel staff in Sagwari Layout Estate and attacks in Garam and Kuduru communities, resulting in fatalities and kidnappings.

The economic toll is substantial, with confirmed ransom payments totalling N653.7 million between 2021 and 2022.

Residents and businesses are bearing the brunt, impacting daily life and economic activities.

Despite the Federal Capital Territory Police Command deploying additional officers, questions arise about the effectiveness of current measures.

The recent abduction in Dutse, where kidnappers reportedly killed three victims due to perceived delays in meeting the ransom demand, underscores the gravity of the situation.
